Have you ever heard the saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know”? Well, if you think about that in terms of your hearing, someone might say, “You don’t know what you’re not hearing”. However, we guarantee that those around you do!
We have a patient who once told us a story regarding a gentlemen he went a round of golf with one day. He tells us that at the end of the game this man asked our patient, “Have I done something to offend you?” Our patient replied, “Of course not! Why would you think that?” To which the man responded, “Because I have been trying to talk to you throughout our golf game and you’ve completely ignored me.” Our patient was horrified. He didn’t know what he was missing! Not long after, he visited our office to get a new hearing test and updated his hearing devices. Even though he already wore hearing devices, they clearly weren’t doing the job any longer!
There are many things to think about with our health. Hardly a day goes by that some new health crisis isn’t looming or reminders of annual dental appointments, physicals, vision exams and the like aren’t causing us concern. For example, did you know that people with diabetes are twice as likely to have a hearing loss? That untreated hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of dementia and depression?
Audiologists recommend having your hearing checked regularly, similar to having an annual physical. In many cases, family or friends will notice your hearing loss long before you do! By checking on an annual basis, we will know of the gradual changes that could occur from year to year and whether or not there is a need for further attention. It’s time to get your hearing tested! After all, “you don’t know what you’re not hearing!” Call today!
